We picked this bike up last fall in a multi bike sort of deal. Actually, we had to buy 3 others from the guy so we could get our hands on this one! Restored to mostly stock, she now sounds, looks, and feels great. She's super light (lets just say she weighs less than some of our past girlfriends) and is a hoot to ride around town and back roads. All we can say is this; she may look small, but once you get this puppy in her powerband... hang on. If you've never ridden one of these, you will be pleasantly surprised. Engine and Final Drive- Totally rebuilt top end including new pistons, rings, clips, and pins. New gaskets and seals throughout. New NGK plugs, and wires.
Intake, Exhaust, and Lubrication- The carbs were cleaned by vapor blasting and overhauled to accommodate the K&N filters. The stock semi-expansion chambers where reused after polishing and installing freshly coated heat shields. The Yamaha Auto-Lube system was rebuilt.
Frame and Swingarm- Blasted down to bare metal and cleaned of any unnecessary tabs, we mounted on new seat brackets and added a removable rear hoop. This way, if you wanted to go back to the stock seat it would be no problem. Nothing we did to the frame can't be undone. We then powder coated the frame, swingarm, and skid plate in gloss black.
Suspension- The forks have been rebuilt with new seals while the lowers were polished and springs powder coated in gloss black to compliment the new rear shocks.
Lighting, Gauges, Controls, and Electrics- Up front we stuck with the original headlight assembly and speedometer and replaced the ignition switch with a NOS Yamaha item. A new left hand switch controls the turn signals, high and low beam, and new horn. New clutch and brake levers. New cushion grips have been installed on the broomstick type handlebar, as well as new rubber on the foot pegs. Mini LED turn signals have been installed front and rear as well as a new smaller brakelight/ running light and license plate bracket. She also got a fresh battery and rectifier.
Body, Tank, and Seat- Yamaha had a black and silver version of the AS1, so we thought we would stick with the color combo but switch it around a little. The tank, side cover, oil tank have been painted silver. The fenders got the same treatment after we cut them down a bit. We then went with a black seat, tank panels and pads, and headlight bucket to give the sort of 'straight across' visual we wanted. There is also a passenger pillion built into the seat and removable passenger pegs so they've got plenty of room to ride.
Brakes, Wheels, and Tires- The bike is riding on new Michelin semi dual sport rubber. All the stopping is handled by the stock front and rear drums holding new brake shoes and springs. The hubs have been vapor blasted and had new bearings pressed in.
